About the series
Anxious People is a Netflix comedy drama series that takes place in a small town outside Stockholm where a bank robber fails to rob a cashless bank, and ends up with eight people being taken hostage in an apartment. Soon after the bank robber gives in, the apartment is stormed by the two dysfunctional police officers Jack and Jim, who also happen to be father and son. Once they are inside the apartment, they are confronted with a huge problem: the apartment is empty and the robber is gone. An investigation to identify the course of events is suddenly transformed into a funny storyline where all the hostages give their take of what actually happened in a series of varied and conflicting testimonies. What the police do not know is that the hostages carry a unique secret – So, what really did happen?
The series is directed by Felix Herngren and is based on the successful author Fredrik Backman’s novel “Anxious People”
Felix Herngren is a famous Swedish director and actor who has also directed popular series such as “Solsidan”, “Bonusfamiljen” and the feature film “The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared”.
About the author
Fredrik Backman has also written the successful book “A man named Ove” which has become an international phenomenon topping the New York Times bestseller list. And the film based on the book achieved an Oscar nomination. Fredrik was born in 1981 and has been active since 2012 with a number of successful books such as “Björnstad” (which is available as a series on HBO MAX), and also “We against you” and “The Winners”. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages.
Scenes filmed in Södertälje City
The series takes place in a small town outside Stockholm and one of the filming locations was Södertälje which is located 30 kilometres south of Stockholm. Several scenes, including the chase from the bank, the media uprising, gunfire from the apartment, take place in the central parts of Södertälje along streets Järnagatan, Nygatan and Badhusgatan.
This is what director Felix Herngren says about the choice of Södertälje as the filming location in an interview with the Swedish public media SVT Nyheter 11/1 2020: “It is quite close to Stockholm, so it is not expensive to transport all the people and actors. And it is a cozy little town. Södertälje residents have been very helpful.”
